The spooky-themed candy aisles can only mean one thing: it’s October! Shake out your sweaters, grab your favorite pumpkin-spiced beverage and ring in the beginning of fall at one of the many fun events happening in the greater Minneapolis area this month.

The Twin Cities Oktoberfest makes a splash beginning on October 4th at the Minnesota State Fairground Progress Center. This beloved two-day event celebrates Bavarian traditions through food, culture, and of course, beer! This year’s event promises exciting new vendors, brews and exclusive, limited edition steins.

Forget the Children of the Corn, it’s time for the Festival of Corn on October 5th, from noon – 8pm. Presented by hip eatery Centro at Popul Vuh, this little festival is a family-friendly event that shows off just what corn is capable of. Try fresh tamales, blue corn margaritas, and learn why an “elote” is one of Mexico’s favorite treats.

Saturday, October 6th is your chance to catch the Eden Prairie Fall Harvest Celebration at the Riley Jacques Barn. This annual event is fun for the whole family, from FREE horse-drawn cart rides, to a history hunt and story stroll through the historic property. Come practice your pumpkin-decorating skills while you enjoy some fresh local treats.

Practice your best shuffle-of-the-undead at the Zombie Pub Crawl on October 12th in Downtown Minneapolis. Certified as the world’s “largest gathering of zombies”, this event features pub crawling, food trucks, live bands on outdoor stages, the goriest costumes around, and a night full of fun that you simply won’t find anywhere else.

For something a little less scary, bring your family to Pumpkins in the Park, also on October 12th. This non-scary, pre-Halloween celebration features a trick-or-treat trail, face painting, and games. Kids will also get to meet their heroes from the Shakopee fire department.

The tenth annual Twin Cities Film Festival runs from October 16th – 26th. A favorite event for film lovers, this year’s program celebrates the work and talent of independent filmmakers in the Twin Cities. Come support and be inspired by your hometown artists – with over 100 films in nearly every imaginable genre, there’s sure to be something to pique your interest.

If Halloween is your main event of October, we have your day covered! Start your day by wearing your costume to get free admission to the ArBOOretum on October 31st. Then, take the kids to Halloween on the Mall for fun, safe trick-or-treating and live entertainment.

Also, every weekend this month and until November 3rd, the Minneapolis zoo hosts the second annual Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular. Over 5,000 carved and decorated pumpkins, along with dazzling light and sound design, create an enchanted forest in the heart of the zoo, making for a perfect date night or evening out with the family.
